The Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture is responsible among others for the following horizontal activities: protection of the environment, aquaculture, forestry, agricultural economy and food industry. The Department for Agricultural Research and Agri-Environmental Management (participating organization of present project) serves as the department in charge of agricultural research under the direction of the state secretary for agriculture and rural development. This secretariat prepares the legislation background for agroeconomic operations and agricultural activities, including the Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union, state aids, research and development activities, agricultural modernization, market organization, water management and commercial policy. Among its responsibilities we find also the duties of developing and supporting the bioeconomy strategy of Hungary, and the coordination of the BIOEAST Initiative, the Central-Eastern European Initiative for Knowledge-based Agriculture, Aquaculture and Forestry in the Bioeconomy which offers a shared strategic research and innovation framework for working towards sustainable bioeconomies in the Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries. The Ministry operates in close collaboration with the National Research, Development and Innovation Office to increase the competitiveness of the network of Hungarian researchers and foster its integration in the European Research Area (ERA).
